What is an R-Multiple? How to Track Risk-Reward in Forex Trading

CoreEdge Blog · October 2025 · Updated October 2026

The R-Multiple is one of the most important metrics in professional trading. It's a simple but powerful way to measure every trade relative to your initial risk — regardless of account size, instrument, or position size.

What Does R-Multiple Mean?

R stands for Risk. Your initial risk on a trade — the distance from your entry to your stop loss — is defined as 1R.

  • If you risk $100 and make $200, that's a 2R trade
  • If you risk $100 and lose $100, that's a -1R trade
  • If you risk $100 and make $300, that's a 3R trade

By normalising every trade to R-multiples, you can compare performance across different account sizes, instruments, and position sizes on a level playing field.

Why R-Multiples Matter for Forex Traders

Most retail Forex traders focus on dollar P&L, which is misleading. A $500 win means nothing if you risked $1,000 to get it (-0.5R). A $200 win is exceptional if you only risked $50 (4R).

R-multiples reveal the truth about your trading edge:

Expectancy = (Win Rate × Average Win R) - (Loss Rate × Average Loss R)

A positive expectancy means your strategy is profitable over a large sample of trades. This is your real edge. Without tracking R-multiples, you can't calculate expectancy.

How to Calculate Your R-Multiple

For a Long trade: - Risk per unit = Entry Price - Stop Loss Price - P&L per unit = Exit Price - Entry Price - R-Multiple = P&L per unit ÷ Risk per unit

For a Short trade: - Risk per unit = Stop Loss Price - Entry Price - P&L per unit = Entry Price - Exit Price - R-Multiple = P&L per unit ÷ Risk per unit

Why You Should Track R-Multiples in a Journal

Tracking R-multiples manually in a spreadsheet is tedious and error-prone. A dedicated trading journal like CoreEdge automatically calculates your R-multiple on every trade the moment you enter your entry, stop, and exit prices.

Over time, CoreEdge shows you: - Your average R per trade - Your best and worst R trades by session, strategy, and emotion - Your equity curve in R terms - Your overall expectancy

This data turns guesswork into a measurable, improvable trading edge.

Start Tracking R-Multiples Automatically

CoreEdge calculates R-multiples automatically for every trade you log. No spreadsheets, no manual calculations. Just enter your prices and let the journal do the maths.
