Prop Firm Trading Journal — What to Track for Evaluations

CoreEdge Blog · October 2025

Prop firm evaluations have changed the landscape for futures and Forex traders. They offer access to funded accounts without risking your own capital — but the evaluation rules are strict, the daily loss limits are tight, and one bad day can end your attempt.

A trading journal is the most important tool for passing a prop firm evaluation. Not because it helps you find better setups, but because it helps you manage the rules, the pressure, and the psychology that cause most evaluation failures.

This guide covers exactly what to track in your journal during a prop firm evaluation.

Why Most Evaluations Fail

Prop firm evaluations don't usually fail because of strategy. They fail because of:

  • Daily loss limit violations — one impulsive trade that exceeds the daily drawdown
  • Trailing drawdown breaches — a losing streak that eats through the trailing max drawdown
  • Emotional decisions under pressure — revenge trading after a loss, or freezing after a string of wins
  • Overtrading to hit profit targets — forcing trades when no setup exists because the clock is ticking

Every one of these is preventable with data. Your journal tells you which of these is your weakness — before it ends your evaluation.

What to Track During an Evaluation

Your journal needs all the standard fields (entry, stop, exit, R-multiple, session, strategy, emotion), plus these evaluation-specific data points:

### Daily R and Daily Loss Limit Tracking

Log your cumulative R for the day after every trade. Know exactly how close you are to the daily loss limit before you take your next trade. If your daily loss limit is 2R and you're at -1.5R, your next trade risks the entire evaluation.

### Trade Count Per Day

Prop firm evaluations often have a minimum trade count requirement (e.g., 10 trades over 5 days). Track your trade count so you never fail on a technicality — and so you don't overtrade trying to hit a number.

### Time to Profit Target

How many days have you been in the evaluation? How much of the profit target have you hit? Are you on pace, behind, or ahead? Tracking this prevents the panic-overtrading that happens when you feel the clock running out.

### Evaluation Phase

Tag whether you're in Phase 1, Phase 2, or funded. The psychology is different in each phase. Phase 1 is the highest-stress phase because failure means starting over. Funded is lower-stress but carries the risk of losing the account. Your journal should show whether your performance changes by phase.

### Rule Adherence Under Pressure

This is the field that matters most. On every trade, log whether you followed your evaluation rules: Did you respect the daily loss limit? Did you avoid trading into news? Did you stick to your session? Did you avoid revenge trades?

After 30 evaluation trades, calculate your rule-adherence rate. If it's below 90%, that's your problem — not your strategy.

The Daily Evaluation Routine

Before the session: - Check your current evaluation status: cumulative profit, days remaining, daily loss limit remaining - Set your max trades for the day (most evaluations are won with 1-3 trades, not 10) - Complete your pre-market readiness check — evaluation pressure amplifies emotional trading - Set a hard stop: if I hit -1R today, I'm done for the day (not waiting for -2R)

During the session: - Log every trade immediately with all evaluation fields - After each trade, check your daily cumulative R against the loss limit - If you hit your personal stop (-1R), stop trading. Don't try to make it back. The evaluation will still be there tomorrow.

End of day: - Log your daily profit/loss, trade count, and rule-adherence - Write a brief note: was today's trading disciplined or forced? - Check your progress: on pace for the profit target? How many days of buffer do you have?

What Your Journal Reveals During an Evaluation

After 20+ evaluation trades, your journal should answer:

  • What's my daily loss limit utilisation? Are you consistently using 50%+ of your daily limit before your best trade? That's a sign you're overtrading early.
  • Which session produces my best evaluation trades? Many prop firm traders find they pass evaluations trading only the first 90 minutes of the NY session — and fail when they trade the afternoon.
  • What's my rule-adherence rate? If it's below 90%, your discipline — not your strategy — is what's risking the evaluation.
  • How does evaluation pressure affect my emotion log? Your "rushed" and "anxious" trades should correlate with your worst outcomes. If they do, the fix is emotional regulation, not strategy.

The Funded Account: What Changes

Once you pass the evaluation and get funded, the psychology shifts. The pressure of the profit target is gone, but the fear of losing the funded account replaces it. Your journal should track this transition:

  • Risk per trade — do you reduce your size after getting funded? Many traders do, and that's often the right call.
  • Win rate by phase — is your funded win rate lower than your evaluation win rate? Fear-based trading is a common funded-account problem.
  • Daily R consistency — funded accounts reward consistency. Your journal should show whether you're grinding out steady R or swinging for big days.

How CoreEdge Supports Prop Firm Traders

CoreEdge's discipline rules engine lets you set hard daily limits: max trades per day, max position size, and lockout after a losing trade. These rules prevent the impulsive trades that end most evaluations.

The trade logger captures all the evaluation-specific fields: daily cumulative R, rule adherence, evaluation phase, and trade count. The session analytics show you which window produces your best evaluation trades.

The pre-trade checklist enforces your evaluation rules before every entry — and the emotion tracking reveals whether evaluation pressure is costing you trades.
