The London Session Trading Guide for Forex Traders

CoreEdge Blog · October 2025 · Updated October 2026

The London session is the most traded session in the Forex market. It produces the highest volume, the most institutional order flow, and some of the cleanest setups of the day. But trading London well requires a structured routine and an understanding of how the session behaves.

This guide covers how to prepare for the London session, what to look for, and what your journal should capture.

London Session Timing

The London session runs from approximately 2:00 AM to 5:00 AM EST (7:00 AM to 10:00 AM GMT). The highest volatility and institutional activity concentrates in the first two hours — the London Kill Zone (2:00 AM to 5:00 AM EST).

The London-NY overlap, from 8:00 AM to 11:00 AM EST, is when both European and American markets are open simultaneously. This window often produces the highest liquidity of the day.

What Makes London Different

London is characterised by:

  • High institutional volume — European banks and hedge funds are actively positioning
  • Trend establishment — the London session often sets the direction for the rest of the day
  • Liquidity sweeps — the London open frequently sweeps Asian session highs or lows before reversing
  • Displacement moves — large impulsive candles that create Fair Value Gaps and Order Block setups

Understanding these characteristics helps you know what to expect — and what to journal.

Your London Session Routine

30 minutes before London open: - Review the Daily and H4 charts. What is the macro bias? - Mark the Asian session high and low. These are likely liquidity targets. - Identify key Order Blocks and FVGs on H1 and M15 - Check the economic calendar for GBP, EUR, and USD events - Complete your pre-market readiness check — are you mentally ready?

At London open (2:00 AM EST): - Watch for a liquidity sweep of the Asian high or low - Look for displacement after the sweep — a strong move in the opposite direction - Identify the Market Structure Shift (MSS) or Change of Character (CHOCH) - Wait for price to return to an Order Block or FVG for entry

During the session: - Only take trades that align with your HTF bias - Log every entry with session tag "London", your strategy confluence, and pre-trade emotion - If no setup forms in the first 90 minutes, sit out — overtrading London is a common mistake

London Session Setups to Track

Tag these in your journal so you can later measure which ones work best for you:

  • Asian range sweep and reversal — price sweeps the Asian high or low, then reverses with displacement. This is one of the highest-probability London setups.
  • Order Block retest after MSS — price breaks structure, retraces to the last opposing Order Block, and continues. Classic SMC setup.
  • FVG fill — price fills a Fair Value Gap created during the London open displacement, then continues in the trend direction.
  • London-NY overlap continuation — a setup that forms during the overlap and rides the combined institutional flow.

What Your Journal Should Reveal

After 50+ London session trades, your journal should answer:

  • Is my London expectancy positive? If yes, London is your session. If no, you need to fix your routine or your setup selection.
  • Which London setup has the highest average R? Your sweep-and-reversal trades might average +1.8R while your FVG fills average +0.6R.
  • What time within London is most profitable? The first hour might be your best window; the last hour might be your worst.
  • How does my London performance compare to NY? Many traders are profitable in one and net losers in the other.

Common London Session Mistakes

Your journal will likely reveal some of these:

  • Entering before the sweep — anticipating the reversal before displacement confirms. This turns high-probability setups into coin flips.
  • Overtrading the first 15 minutes — the London open is volatile. Waiting 15 minutes for structure to form improves your win rate.
  • Ignoring the economic calendar — a GBP or EUR news event at 2:00 AM can invalidate your technical analysis entirely.
  • Trading London with no Asian range context — the Asian high and low are your primary liquidity reference. Without them, you're trading blind.

How CoreEdge Helps London Session Traders

CoreEdge's session tagging lets you mark every trade as London, NY, Asia, or Other. The analytics break down your expectancy, win rate, and average R by session automatically. You can also tag specific London setups (Asian sweep, OB retest, FVG fill) as strategy confluences and compare their performance.

The pre-trade checklist enforces your London routine — HTF bias confirmed, session active, key level identified, risk defined — before every entry. The economic calendar shows you exactly when GBP and EUR events hit.
